The Parish Churches of St. Mary and St. James, West Derby
Baptisms can be booked in person at the church on *Monday evenings between 7.00pm and 8.00pm. No appointment is necessary. Baptisms are usually booked about two or three months in advance.
St Mary's West Derby warmly welcomes those who live within the parish boundaries to approach the church with requests for Baptisms, Weddings, Wedding Blessings and Renewal of Vows, and Funerals.
However if you live outside the parish we will ask you to approach the vicar for the parish in which you reside. If you then decide that you wish to have your Baptism service at St Mary's their permission will be required.

You must have three. You can have more than three if you wish - there is no upper limit. Godparents should be 16 years of age or over and should be confirmed members of the Christian Church. It is better to have practising Roman Catholic or Methodist, etc., godparents than non-committed members of the Anglican Church. Traditionally boys have two Godfathers and one Godmother and girls two Godmothers and one Godfather.
We do not allow photographs during the service but we are willing to pose with the child and family afterwards - so bring your camera. Copyright law and performing rights legislation mean we cannot allow video recording unless you have signed a consent form (obtainable from us) and paid a fee - usually about 25. This must be arranged at the preparation meeting the month before the baptism.
There is no fee for baptism but we make no apology for taking a collection during the service! It costs 10 per person per week to keep St Mary's open and working in the community. It will be a similar cost at St James'!
As a member of the Church we hope you will want to join us in worship. The main Sunday service is the Parish Eucharist at 9.30am when the church gets pretty full and there are facilities to take young children into the adjoining St Mary's Millennium Centre if they get restless. Baptisms at St Mary's are held twice each month on the 3rd and 4th Sundays at 12 noon and at St James' baptisms are held once each month as part of the main Sunday service which begins at 11.00am.
This is an informal get-together for mums (and dads!) and pre-school children. It meets in St Mary's Millennium Centre, adjacent to the Church, on Wednesdays from 2pm-3 15pm. There are lots of toys for the children to play with and carers can relax and chat over a cup of tea.
You can keep in touch with St Mary's and St James' by taking the parish magazine VIEWPOINT that is published monthly and delivered throughout the parish. Alternatively it can be collected from church. Your child's baptsim will be recorded in the magazine - which you can order from one of the clergy.
