There has been a choir of men and boys at St. Maryís since Wednesday 13th April 1853, when the choir sang at the laying of the foundation stone.
On 4th November 2012, girls were admitted to the choir for the first time to bolster the treble line - a most welcome addition.
Our present Organist and Choirmaster, Peter Miller, was appointed to St Maryís in 1969. Peter rehearses the choir at the two regular weekly practices. Kevin Mulcahy shares the organ playing and choir conducting with Peter. Both Peter and Kevin are paid by the PCC, based on RCO/RSCM rates.
The probationers meet, initially, at separate times, and are helped by other trbles. The choir is affiliated to the RSCM and participates in local events, and in the Bishopís/Deanís Chorister Award scheme.
The choir sings at the weekly Parish Eucharist and monthly Evensong, two very different services. At The Parish Eucharist the choir sings an anthem or motet, and a number of different settings, congregational in flavour, are used. The monthly service of Evensong is fully choral, with an introit, a setting of the canticles, and an anthem; on great festivals there is a procession. The choir also participates in other special services throughout the year at St Mary's, St James, and other churches. They also occasionally sing at various cathedrals and churches across the country.
